My grandparents from my father's side are from Anxi, a beautiful countryside in Mainland China that is known for producing some world-class Tie Guan Yin.
I never knew this until most recently.
I was infused with shame for never getting to know them. They passed away when I was in my twenties. I had left home to further my studies in the UK, ecstatic about leaving behind my roots and starting anew in the land of my dreams.
I had always had my head stuck in novels, dreaming of a new world, a new identity. I brushed aside my culture and my mother tongues, embarrassed for the little things that made me Chinese.
I went to a Chinese school from middle school to high school though, thanks to my father's insistence that I "learn mandarin!". I knew about Laozi and Confucius etc, but they seemed foisted upon me at a time when I would rather read Shakespeare.
Funny how things evolve, and what has come to save me from a lifetime of relapses and self-sabotage.
When Tea found me in a Tea Ceremony a year ago in Hong Kong, I heard distinctly for the first time, a plant spirit speaking to me. Tea Spirit said to me: "You have to serve. You have to take the leap of faith, pack up everything you have and leave. Then you will serve Tea."
I pretty much looked up from my emptied bowl and smiled through tears as I looked out of the window of the tearoom. I saw the sun setting behind the high-rise building, its metal, glass and concrete surface glinting sharply in my gaze.
I have always had Tea running through my being. I just was not awakened to my lineage, my Ancestry. My roots. Until now.
I made the decision to quit my job and move out of Hong Kong to go to a new city. I began to sit with tea every single day. In the new year, I began to live the life of my wildest dreams.
I began to serve Tea.
I have a kind loving fiancé who is also my soulmate and rock. There is nothing we cannot say and express to each other.
I met the most spiritually attuned soul friend for whom I have always wished.
I became part of an amazing community of open-hearts and inspiring women. I continue to meet such amazing beings through the Way of Tea.
All of this, during a time of heightened anxiety and uncertainty, I found a solid calm joyful space to which I can return every single moment in time.
